Homeschooler of the Month: June

Hi everyone!
Sorry this post is so late this month.  I have been super busy!  Where does the time go?  Anyway,  Alan Baer, a friend of mine from Mother of Divine Grace, volunteered last minute to be the next HotM!

1) Introduce yourself!  Your name and age (if you don't mind)  When did
you start homeschooling?  What are some of your life aspirations?

My name is Alan Baer, and I am 16 years old. I started homeschooling in the 2004-2005 school year, and I have just finished 10th Grade. I hope to be a teacher, whether of math or philosophy.

2) What curriculum do you use?  What is your favorite subject or part of
school?

I use Mother of Divine Grace School for education. My favorite subject would either be Ancient History or Math.

3) What do you do for fun when you're not homeschooling?
For fun I will use the MODG Proboards site, along with Legio Christi, another Proboards site. I will also read, play airsoft, and hang out with friends.

4) What kind of books do you read for fun? What book character do you most
relate to?

I generally read fiction and historical fiction. I’m not sure what book character I would relate to, but possibly Sir Piers Rudde from Louis de Wohl’s The Quiet Light

5) What is your plan for after high school?  Is college part of your plan?
If so, what college(s)?

I hope to pursue my education as far as I can. I might also join the military. I would like to major in history or math. I would like to attend college, either TAC or another college from MODG’s recommended list.

6) What is one thing you'd like to do when you're grown up? (serious or
fun)

Probably go skydiving, although there are many fun and awesome things that I would like to do. Possibly also go to the Holy Land.

7) Do you get any interesting questions when you tell people you're
homeschooled?  What are some?

Generally people ask me “When do you do homework?” “Do you have social education?” “Are you Catholic or something?” “Do you really have all your schoolbooks at your house?”

8) Who is your favorite Saint?

Probably St. Thomas Aquinas or St. Catherine of Sienna.

9) What is the most memorable thing about homeschooling?  Do you have any
funny stories about homeschooling?

I think the most memorable moment for me would be when history ‘clicked’. I had been seeing it as a timeline of dates, and it was boring, but as I saw more and more people and events contemporary to each other, more and more of the picture fell into place and all of a sudden, history was very very fun.

10) What is your favorite bible verse? Do you have a favorite quote?

My favorite Bible verse would probably be Luke 5:8 : “When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.’ ”

11) Do you have any advice for beginning homeschoolers or people
considering homeschooling? (from a student's perspective)

Any advice that I would have would be: ‘Have fun with your schoolwork. If you feel like something isn’t fun, make it fun, and it will be much easier.’

Thank you so much Alan for stepping up last minute!  I loved your answers!

  1. So is mother of diving grace a homeschool co-op sort of thing, or is it just like a catalogue where you buy books??

    1. Mother of Divine Grace is a long distant school or homeschool curriculum. We follow a lesson plan and have a set curriculum of books. :) There are students from all over the world who use MODG.
