Homeschooler of the Month: October

Hello lovely peeps!

This month, our Homeschooler of the Month is a wonderful friend, homeschooler, and Christian.  She has a blog, http://majesticadventures.wordpress.com, so please go check it out!!!! She posts funny stories, great music and all kinds of fun gems. Thank you so much Em for answering my questions! <3
So without further ado....

1) Introduce yourself!  Your name and age (if you don't mind) When did you start homeschooling?  What are some of your life aspirations?
Hello hello hello! My name is Emma: writer, bookworm, music-listener, movie-quoter and God’s peculiar treasure. Greetings! I’ve been homeschooled most of my life, and whenever people ask me if I want to go back to public school, I gotta say, nope! This chick and homeschooling definitely go hand in hand, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. :D
As far as life aspirations…I want to travel. The world is so beautiful and there’s so many adventures just waiting to happen! And I love a good adventure.

2) What curriculum do you use?  What is your favorite subject or part of
 school?
I don’t use a one particular curriculum for every single subject; I use a variety of different kinds. Life of Fred for math and Writing Strands for writing are two, for example. And I really enjoy both of those.
My favorite part of school…well, I really like writing. (Writing is so much fun.) And this year I’m enjoying math. (Score!) I like learning a different language, so there’s that. Oh, oh, and chemistry! I like doing the experiments. …wait. I think I just named off pretty much all my subjects. Well, there, I guess there’s your answer. I’m basically enjoying everything about school this year.

 3) What do you do for fun when you're not homeschooling?
So many things, oh where do I begin! I have a great many interests besides schooling. In fact, there are many things I would rather be doing other than school (thus the reason I have the motto of “Get up and get it done”) but that is beside the point.
As I mentioned before I love a good adventure. An adventure, for me, can be pretty much anything. It can be getting lost in the woods or trying a new recipe for cookies that didn’t turn out right. Or it could be almost running into a tree on your bike. (I did this once because I turned too sharply for the speed I was going and headed straight for a tree. I opted for hitting my handlebars on the telephone pole guide wire instead, and walked away unscathed and a much wiser cyclist.)
Anyways, I very much enjoy anything outdoors and anything active, as well as baking, writing, reading and photography.

 4) What kind of books do you read for fun? What book character do you most
 relate to?
Is there any other type of reading than fun reading? Actually, yes, I will answer my own question and say yes. Some books are just very hard to get through. But I don’t read those, I read the fun books, like The Christy Miller Series by Robin Jones Gunn. There are 12+ books about Christy as she goes through life’s challenges of growing up and grows stronger in her relationship with God. It’s my favorite series. ROBIN WRITES AMAZINGLY. But I like reading books like those. :D
Arghhh. This is so hard. I think I would have to identify with Christy the most. (Who is Christy you ask? See above paragraph.) I don’t know why—I just do! She’s relatable.

 5) What is your plan for after high school?  Is college part of your plan?
 If so, what college(s)?
My plan. Hm. Well, isn’t this a good question. I will come back and answer it when I’ve figured it out myself.

 6) What is one thing you'd like to do when you're grown up? (serious or
 fun)
My friend and I are going to live in a house made of moose tracks ice cream and jump on a Jell-O trampoline.

7) Do you get any interesting questions when you tell people you're
 homeschooled?  What are some?
Sometimes! People ask about my friends…do I see them often? Yup, I still got my friends! :D I’m a social butterfly. But our homeschool is actually named. We named it because we got sick of answering all the questions that come along with saying “I’m homeschooled.” I recommend this if you get tired of explaining why you’re not in school to grocery store clerks. It works wonders.

 8) Who is your favorite role model?
I’ve never thought about this before, really. And I really don’t know how to answer this question. There are plenty of people that I admire and look up to, like my parents. But I mean, ultimately, Jesus is my absolutely toppity-top favorite role model. I’d rather not be like other Christians; I’d rather be more like Christ. :)

9) What is the most memorable thing about homeschooling?  Do you have any
 funny stories about homeschooling?
One day there was a beautiful, juicy watermelon in our fridge. It was begging to be eaten. Eat me! Eat me! Okay, well, it wasn’t actually saying eat me. That would be weird. But it was perfect. (This all has something to do with homeschooling, I promise) At the time we were also reading this really terrific book, The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. It was also a really beautiful day.
So we decided what better day to skip those horrifying math problems and scientific lingo than today? The watermelon needed to be eaten up anyways, and the book wasn’t going to read itself. Might as well! We sat in lawn chairs, moving to keep in the sun’s warm rays and read and ate watermelon.
It’s one of my fondest memories of homeschooling.

 10) What is your favorite Bible verse? Do you have a favorite quote?
My favorite Bible verse changes a lot, depending on what I’m going through at the time. I’m not sure I have a favorite right now…I have a lot of verses that I really like. I will share a couple.
2 Timothy 1:7 ~ For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.
Isaiah 40:8 ~ The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.

11) Do you have any advice for beginning homeschoolers or people
considering homeschooling? (from a student's perspective)
IT CAN BE FUN.
THANK YOU to Sarah for asking me to be Homeschooler of the Month. It’s been fun to answer these questions—hopefully it was fun for you to read them! :D  I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day. Jesus loves you! Emma xo

  1. What a fun interview! All really entertaining answers, but I especially loved Emma's answer that she did not want to try to be like other Christians, but to be more like Christ himself!! Very insightful!!
